The diversities of roulette: Playing with new rules

Roulette is a very simple game, although the fact that there are different variations of the game may make it seem a little more complicated.

There is actually very little difference between the main variants of American roulette, European roulette and French roulette. The basic principle of the game is essentially the same.

The widespread popularity of the game has led many online casinos to develop additional versions, and most of them are very easy to learn. Ultimately, they are all based on betting on the next number.

On this page we present you with various details about the most popular roulette variants and some of the versions offered by online casinos.

European roulette and American roulette

American roulette, as the name suggests, is the version of the game usually played in American casinos. European roulette is the version played in most parts of the world outside of America.

The only tangible difference between these two variants is that the American wheel has a single zero and a double zero, while the European wheel has only one zero. Both wheels use the numbers 1-36, although the order of the numbers is different in the two versions.
As a general rule, you should play European roulette if you have a choice, as the house advantage is less than that of American roulette.

Adding the double zero has virtually no impact on the way the game is played, other than adding an extra number to bet on, but it does make a difference on the house advantage.

The odds for betting on both games are equal. Unfortunately, American Roulette has an extra number to bet on which creates a bigger house advantage!

Therefore, in strictly mathematical terms, European roulette is slightly more favourable for the player.
Another difference lies in the bets available. The vast majority of them are the same, but there are other bets that are not offered in both games. One is obviously the single bet on double zero, which cannot be placed in European roulette, as there are none.

There is another additional bet in American roulette: the five-digit bet. This covers the zero, double zero and the numbers 1, 2 and 3.

In European roulette, there are a few additional bets called « called bets » or « track bets ». These are bets that cover a specific section of the wheel or a specific group of numbers.

When playing in a land-based casino, you can ask the dealer to place the bets for you using your chips. This highlights another difference between the two versions; in American Roulette, the dealer cannot place bets on your behalf.

Of course, it makes absolutely no difference when you play online.

French Roulette

French roulette is almost exactly the same as European roulette. There is no double zero and all bets are the same. The betting board is presented slightly differently, but this does not change the way the game is played.

More importantly, there are a few additional rules known as the « Sharing » rule and the « In Jail » rule.

These rules are optional, so not all casinos apply them.
They can also be used in European roulette, but they are much more commonly used in the French version.
The « La Partage » rule states that if a player has made an even money bet (such as red or black, or odd or even) and zero comes up, he receives half of his bet.
The « In Jail » rule states that instead of receiving half of his bet, under these circumstances, a player may leave his bet on the table for the next round. This is known as placing the « in jail » bet, hence the name « in jail » bet.
On the next round, if the bet wins, the player gets all of his bet back, but no winnings. If the bet loses, the entire wager is forfeited.

Online Roulette Versions

In recent years, many online casinos have introduced new roulette variants with additional features or modified rules.

Although the traditional versions remain the most popular, some of these new games offer something a little different and worth looking into.

Mini roulette is a great example, and this variant is offered in several online casinos. It is essentially a miniature version of the game. There are fewer numbers and fewer betting options, but everything else is essentially the same.

Multi-wheel roulette is another example that seems to be taking off. Again, the main principles are largely the same, but in this version you can bet on the outcome of several wheels at once.
The number of wheels available is usually between two and eight.

There are also other variants, such as progressive roulette, which can pay a high price if the same number comes up in several consecutive spins.
