American Roulette: Rules and Tips for Playing Roulette
American roulette is one of the most popular table games in American casinos. It also enjoys great popularity in Asian and British casinos, but is less popular among European players who tend to prefer European roulette.
The reason why European roulette is preferred by most European players is that it offers a lower house edge and therefore offers a better chance of winning to the players. The house advantage is higher at American roulette because it is played using a double zero roulette wheel as opposed to a single zero roulette wheel which is used to play European roulette.
Double Zero Roulette
In the 18th century, French immigrants fleeing the French Revolution brought with them to New Orleans, then the gambling capital of the United States, many games that were popular in Europe. They introduced Americans to Craps, Baccarat, Blackjack and European Roulette.
Unfortunately, American casino operators were not too kind to European roulette because they thought it was too advantageous for the gambler. They changed the game in several ways, but after a few years of trying different variants of the game, they opted for the type of American roulette that is played today.
The American roulette wheel offers numbers 1 to 36 and numbers 0 and 00. The order of the numbered slots on the roulette wheel is different from that of European roulette, but other than that the games are the same.
The purpose of American roulette
American Roulette is a simple game with only one game objective to guess correctly on which numbered slot machine the ball will land. Making correct guesses pays you a payout based on the type of bet you made (each bet has its own payout) and the amount you bet.
American Roulette Table Limits
Each game in the casino has betting limits that dictate the maximum and minimum amount that can be bet in a single spin. When approaching an American Roulette table, look for a small sign on the side of the table that displays the table limits.
The basic rules of American Roulette
There are some things you need to know before you start playing American Roulette in a land-based casino :
- American Roulette uses different chips than other casino games. You must exchange your money or regular casino chips with the dealer at the table you are about to play at. Each player is given different coloured chips so that players’ bets are not confused.
- Once you have received your chips, you can start playing by making bets. Bets are made on the roulette table which is marked with all the different betting options. Place your chips on the bet or combination of bets you wish to make.
- The dealer will then spin the wheel. You can place, change or remove bets even after the dealer has spun the wheel, until the dealer calls « no more bets ». From that point on, you are not allowed to change bets that have already been placed.
- Once the roulette ball has landed on a numbered slot, the dealer announces the winning number and marks it on the roulette table using a cart (a type of marker). They then clear all losing bets and start paying out the winners. When the dealer pays the winner, you are allowed to start placing your bets for the next round of play.
