European roulette, American roulette, French roulette, Mexican roulette, 3D roulette, mini roulette and then royal roulette… There are many roulette variants and it has become almost impossible to list them all. The expansion of online casinos on the web will have made it possible to popularise them. In terms of graphics, online roulette is improving every year. The basic digital versions of online roulette, originally developed in the 1980s, have been replaced by new versions that give an impression of incredible realism. Betting, the croupier takes care of the rotation of the cylinder and brings the ball into play which will stop on a numbered square. You win the kettledrum.
Table material and staff
Roulette is played on an elongated table. At the end of the table is the wheel, with the dealer facing the players. The table is arranged with boxes for numbers 1 to 36 in three columns and 12 rows. At the end of the part of the layout closest to the croupier, above the numbers 1, 2 and 3, there are boxes for 0 and 00. Each of the numbers 1 to 36 is surrounded by a red or black oval or rectangle. The 0 and 00 have a green background. This rectangular grid, with one box for each number, is used for bets called « inside bets ».
Apart from the numbered boxes, there are several other boxes for « outside bets », with up to 18 numbers at a time. Most of the areas for outside bets are on the long side of the table opposite the dealer. However, at the end of the rectangle away from the dealer, there is a dedicated area for placing bets on each 12-digit column.
The wheel itself has 38 numbered slots, each with the same coloured background as the corresponding number on the table layout. The small hard ball used to be made of ivory; now it is usually made of plastic. The croupier has to turn the wheel in one direction and throw the ball with it in the opposite direction around the track in the bowl-shaped groove that contains the wheel. As the speed of the ball decreases, it falls off the track towards the wheel itself and bounces until it settles into a numbered slot.
Rules of the game
Roulette table seats are reserved for players only. Even if a non-player sits with only one player at the table, the dealer will ask the non-player to move.
Play begins after the dealer has cleared all losing bets and paid out all winners from the previous round. Players have time to place bets by placing chips on the layout before the dealer begins the spin. After the spin begins, players may continue betting until the ball is about to fall from the track at the top of the wheel to the numbered spots. Then the dealer will call, « No more bets. »
The ball will bounce, then finally settle in one spot. Next, the dealer will place a marker on the layout over the corresponding number – or over all the chips that have been bet on that number. The dealer will then clear all losing bets and pay all those who bet on the winning number or combinations that include the winning number. When all of this is done, the dealer will remove the number marker from the layout and betting can begin again.
The choice of how many chips to place on the roulette table depends on the type of bet you wish to make. In the next section we will look at the difference between indoor and outdoor betting, and some betting systems used by experienced players.
